Barzani calls Europe to define Kurdistan’s tragedies as Genocide
6-18-13 Shafaq News / The President of Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani demanded the coordinator of EU Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton to make efforts to define Anfal operations crime
and use of chemical weapons against Kurds as genocide officially, while Ashton confirmed that the gains achieved by the region came after great sacrifices, it is the right of the Kurdish people to defend and protect it.
Ashton arrived on Monday evening to Kurdistan Region, after talks with officials in Baghdad.
“Ashton confirmed that the gains made by Kurdistan Region came after all those tragedies, tribulations and sacrifices,” a statement by the Presidency of Kurdistan Region received by “Shafaq News” stated.
“Genocide suffered by Kurdistan people, the political situation in the region, the Syrian crisis and problems of Syrian refugees were issues discussed in this meeting”.
“Barzani announced that the international community was not at the required level in helping Syrian refugees in Kurdistan region and this is an evidence of neglect and lack of concern”.
Barzani called “Foreign Affairs of the European Union to put pressure on their channels to urge the countries of the European Union and the international community to pay more interest to help Syrian refugees in Kurdistan “.
For her part, Ashton expressed “ her readiness to deliver the call to define genocide against Kurdistans’ people to the relevant authorities and expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the initiative of Kurdistan Region in receiving and accommodating a large number of Syrian refugees,” According to the same statement.
“EU is looking for ways to deliver aid to Syrian refugees residing in Kurdistan,” the statement added.
The coordinator of Foreign Affairs in the European Union, Catherine Ashton arrived in Baghdad on Monday and held talks with officials in the federal government that dealt with bilateral relations and regional issues, particularly the crisis in Syria and the Iranian nuclear file.
Ashton held meetings with Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki , Parliament Speaker, Osama al-Nujaifi and Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs , Hussain al-Shahristani before heading to Kurdistan Region.
